Today we celebrate Halloween. It first originated with the Druids over 2,000 years ago. It was called the ancient festival of Samhain where people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off evil spirits. It was and is a powerful turning point in the wheel of the year. It is a cycle of death and rebirth. Many believe this to be the start of the New Year. This is an ideal time to let the old go, with hopes of a better year.
When I think of it, I think about my loved ones that have passed before me. Since the veil between this world and the next is very powerful at this time of year, it is a great time to contact the dead. There is no special gift you need to do this. Quiet yourself down, say a prayer, create your intention and see if you can feel or sense your loved one. Often, the night before I will set an extra place at the table for Spirit. I will even put some food on the plate to offer it up to them.
This is an excellent time to do some kind of ritual or offer up some prayers, light a candle or meditate. There is no need to be afraid but it is a good idea to protect yourself first, as there are mischievous spirits that like to mess around with you.
Sage yourself and your house for protection. It is a time for you to own more of your own power. Power should not be feared if you are always using it for the good of all and is backed by the light. Enjoy this night for it is so much more than costumes and candy. You can take a leap in a new direction with your own intuition. You may wish to journal or even create an altar of pictures or objects of your loved ones. This is like an invitation for them to come and join the party. You can count on it! Just enjoy this powerful time of year. You will be so glad you did!
