Gaining Momentum On The New Year

Writer: Brenda EdwardsBrenda Edwards

I know it is only the beginning of December and your head is probably spinning with a long to do list of Christmas shopping and parties but before you know it we will be in the throws of the New Year. Although I have only taken a peak into the energies of 2024,  it promises to have more collective challenges for all of us. We tend to think if only we can get to the end of the year we can wipe the slate clean and start over. If only it could be that simple. We can however get a jump start on looking at our own personal intentions for the New Year. I suggest before you do that get aligned with what’s important to you. You don’t want to accomplish something just to please someone else. That will never get you there. Start early and look at what you did accomplish over the last year. Did you write that book you said you would do? Did you lose those 20 pounds you said you would? It is important not to beat yourself up. That serves no one.

Maybe you did accomplish other things you didn't even know were possible.

Start by reviewing 2023. Make notes of what you feel good about. Ask yourself where you fell short. Before you move on don't just unconsciously copy the same list and flip it to 2024. As you review the old list if it is something you haven't accomplished yet ask yourself if it still excites you. If yes, move it to the new list. If the answer is no give yourself permission to cross it off your list. Maybe you just thought at the time that it was important to you. If you're not sure where you want to go in the new year look for areas of discontent. If there is an area of your life that you're not happy with you may want to begin there. What would make you happy? That's always a good start.

Don't forget to ask why you want to accomplish that. It is so important to know that.

Your why will help you build momentum to get there. Once you have that in place you can start formulating your goals and intentions. It is also important to look at the feelings you wish to have. The essence of what you want. You may have a goal of having more peace in your life. The next step is to define what will make you feel more peaceful. Maybe it's creating a meditation practice twice a day. Then you will know where to begin.

Getting a jump-start for 2024 is important. Don't wait till the morning of January 1st to wake up and feel pressured to write a bunch of things in your new notebook that you wish to accomplish. Take your time and align with what's truly important to you. Remember, only you can define what's really important in YOUR life. Take your time and make a decision to have 2024 your best year yet!
