Learning to Receive: Opening Your Heart to the Beauty of Being Supported

There are lessons in life that we can understand intellectually, but it often takes a deeper experience to truly live them.

Learning to receive has been one of those lessons for me.

So many of us have been taught to measure our worth by what we do for others. How much we give. How much we help. How much we accomplish. How much we can carry.

Giving can feel natural. Receiving can feel much harder.

Receiving can make us feel vulnerable. It can bring up feelings of discomfort, indebtedness, or even the question of whether we deserve what is being offered.

But receiving is not selfish.

It is part of the natural rhythm of life.

There is an inhale and an exhale. A giving and a receiving. A pouring out and a filling back up.

When we continually give without allowing ourselves to receive, eventually there is nothing left to pour from.

Learning That Receiving Is Part of the Balance

Receiving asks us to believe that we are worthy without having to earn everything first.

It asks us to open our hands instead of always reaching out to take care of someone else.

Sometimes receiving looks like accepting love without questioning it.

Sometimes it means accepting a compliment instead of immediately dismissing it.

Sometimes it means allowing someone to help you, resting without guilt, or welcoming abundance without immediately wondering what you need to do in return.

These things can sound simple, but for many of us, they can be incredibly difficult.

We can become so accustomed to being the strong one, the helper, the caregiver, or the person everyone else can count on that allowing someone to show up for us feels unfamiliar.

But there is grace in letting others give to us, too.

When we refuse to receive, we can sometimes unknowingly deny another person the joy of giving.

Receiving creates connection.

It says, “I trust you enough to let you show up for me.”

What Grief Has Taught Me About Receiving

This lesson has become especially personal for me following Gerard’s passing.

I have been overwhelmed by the love that has surrounded me. The prayers, food, gifts, cards, messages, and countless acts of kindness have touched my heart more deeply than I can put into words.

And, honestly, it was uncomfortable at first.

I had spent so much of my life being the giver that suddenly being on the receiving end felt unfamiliar.

But Spirit kept saying the same thing to me:

Receive.

So I began to practice.

Instead of questioning whether I needed the help, I allowed myself to receive it.

Instead of feeling like I needed to immediately give something back, I allowed myself to simply feel the love.

And the more I opened myself to receiving, the more I could feel the blessing in it.

That experience has reminded me that giving and receiving were never meant to exist separately.

They are part of the same cycle.

We give.

We receive.

We pour out.

We are filled again.

And there is beauty in both.

This Month's Rose Reflection

The roses have been blooming everywhere this summer, and I invite you to notice what you're noticing.

What is it about a rose that draws you in?

Is it the fragrance?

The color?

The softness of the petals?

The fullness of the bloom?

Nature reminds us that everything moves through seasons. There is a time for planting, a time for growing, a time for blooming, and a time for rest.

Summer invites us into our fullest bloom.

It is a season of creativity, joy, movement, and expansion. Perhaps you find yourself wanting to paint, meditate, journal, spend time outside, walk along the beach, go swimming, or simply sit beneath a tree.

There is no right way to enjoy the season.

The invitation is simply to notice what brings you joy.

Before the Fall Equinox arrives, there is still time to enjoy this beautiful season.

Let the sun restore the coffers of your soul.

Let yourself exhale.

Think of it as restoring your batteries for the long haul.

You may be surprised by how much more you have to give when you have allowed yourself to be filled first.

A Blessing for Fear

May I meet my fear with tenderness instead of resistance.

May I remember that fear is not always a warning to turn my back. Sometimes it is simply what comes next.

May I trust that I do not need to see the entire path before taking the next step.

When fear whispers that I am not ready, may my soul remind me of everything I have already survived, learned, and become.

I choose faith over fear, love over limitation, and trust over the need to know.

May I walk forward gently, knowing that I am guided, supported, and held as I become more fully who I came here to be.

And so it is.

A Rose Petal of Wisdom

You are not becoming someone new.

You are remembering the Divine truth of who you have always been.

Perhaps that is what receiving really asks of us.

To open our hands.

To soften our hearts.

To trust that we do not have to do everything alone.

You have given enough to know the beauty of giving.

Now perhaps, it is time to discover the beauty of receiving.

Let yourself receive the love.

Let yourself receive the support.

Let yourself receive the joy.

Let yourself receive the blessings that are already making their way toward you.

The New Spiritual Path is About Embodiment

For years, spirituality was taught as leaving the physical experience behind. Transcend the body. Rise above emotion. Detach from the material world. But true awakening is not escape. It is embodiment
